Singapore Watercolour Society

It is important to recognize the works of those individuals who had contributed to the quality and craftsmanship of watercolour painting. Therefore, the Society had designed this gallery to recognize their efforts and contributions.

Each year, the Society recognizes 5 members who had produced outstanding work. Their works will be displayed here until next year’s review. These paintings serve as an encouragement to other members, and also a reflection of another milestone for the development of Singapore watercolour painting.

The 5 most outstanding works are selected and voted by the members of the Society. Only a Singapore Watercolour Society member can participate in this effort and only 5 members’ works will be selected to be displayed here.

Title: Water Worship (Banaras)
By Chan Chang How

For this painting I chose to use GVARRO paper for its beautiful texture and the whiteness of the paper. I started the painting by splashing water on the paper to wet the background. Colours were then added in controlled applications until I got the effect I was looking for. In painting the head, I used Art Spectrum’s Permanent Indian Yellow mixed with Burnt Sienna also from the same brand name. I added to this mixture a tinge of Cerulean Blue from the Rowney range of colours. The forehead of the portrait was left uncoloured with the whiteness of the paper showing through. This was to depict the ash that the holy man had spread on his forehead. The beard was also left mostly untouched except for some modelling with shadow colours to give body to the mass of beard hair.

Title: The Companion
By Seah Kam Chuan

"As the saying goes, “good things come in pairs”! In my watercolour painting “The Companion”, I wish to depict the importance of the inter-relationship of all living and non-living objects in this universe.

I was inspired by a scene of pigeons resting on a tongkang during one of my outdoor painting sessions at Punggol (north-east side of Singapore Island). The rubber tyres, in this instance, although old and worn act as a protection to the sides of the tongkang. Together, with the ropes, they kind of support one another. At the same time, pigeons in pairs, came to enjoy the peace and tranquility on the tongkangs. I was greatly motivated to capture this into my painting. Be it human or objects, they are always closely related to each other. This is the theme which I wish to portray in this painting.

When I create a painting, I believe it is more than just the colours or technique that are applied. It is also important to introduce my thoughts and concept into my paintings too."
